Attempting to set up Windows 7 64-bit with SP1 on an older PC is challenging. The BIOS needs UEFI and legacy boot enabled. Using only UEFI removed the optical drive, leaving Windows 7 on a disc. The intention was to install on a 500GB SSD, but GPT formatting prevents it. Setting the drive to MBR didn’t resolve the issue. Despite the drive being recognized in Windows 10, it still reports a firmware error for the SSD, even though it previously worked. In Storage Executive, the firmware warning appears software-related. Formatting the SSD via Disk Management is fine, but the installation remains blocked. The problem seems tied to the Windows version on the disc and the firmware message in Storage Executive.

Do you have a machine with a hard disk that can read discs? Various programs exist to transform the Windows installer into a USB stick, and once connected, enter your valid activation code during setup. Search online for "winToFlash" to learn about the USB approach.

I assembled this system in 2012. I used Windows for many years. I never adjusted the UEFI configuration before now after searching online for fixes. Therefore, it's not the specific setting that's causing the problem, since I never modified it and Windows 7 worked perfectly.

Inside the windows installer, choosing "Custom Installation" opens a disk manager with complete access to all partitions. The drive will then display there.

It indicates it won't install on any of your drives. I own two: one with Windows 10 64-bit on a 128GB SSD, and another empty 500GB SSD.

I can attempt that. It’s a legacy system, and I’m loading the disk controller drivers to check if M.2 devices appear in the disk selection during Windows installation.

I mentioned trying Legacy but never mentioned having an M.2 drive. I’ve never experienced this problem before—my PC has been running Windows 7 for many years, and I’ve reinstalled it numerous times over the past.
