I’m trying to switch my gaming PC setup from Windows 7 Pro to OSX 10.10.1. I have a 2TB HDD running Windows, and I want to keep my college projects that rely on OSX. I’m considering adding a 512GB SSD for OSX but am worried about accidentally erasing the Windows drive when installing it. I think using a bootloader might be necessary to manage the transitions between the operating systems. I’m not sure how this works and feel uncertain about the process.

When I tried dual booting, the system was using the same disk, but I needed to switch to the Mac OS X side by using the memory stick since the bootloader wasn’t set up properly.

There shouldn't be any risk to your Windows 7 drive. I suggest disconnecting the Windows 7 drive during OS X installation. You can follow online tutorials for a straightforward procedure.
