Another useful trick 1 - Press Alt plus F4, then click Start and then Shut Down. Step 3 also helps, as does unplugging the PC from the wall. For consoles, steps 3 and 4 work too.

My L/R history sometimes jumps back one frame... other times it just crashes completely.

L/R returns after one frame during pause. When the video starts playing, it transitions quickly or stalls for three seconds (or causes glitches).
