Hello,
I previously thought that within retro emulation platforms such as RetroArch and RetroPie, only the game ROMs were considered illegal to share publicly. But what about the BIOSes of the emulated machines? Do they come with the emulator software you install, or is there another way? I suppose it’s not necessary to look them up separately.

They don't, at least not with the legal distributions, there are some BIOSes that are reverse engineered and don't contain any copyrighted material, but otherwise you need to copy the BIOS of your actual machine.
