You can upgrade directly to Windows 10 without losing data. Just back up your files on an SD card and prepare a bootable USB drive for installation.

I attempted to put Windows 10 on an iMac that was using Vista. The best option seems to be starting with Windows 7 and then upgrading to 10. Since the Vista setup might have failed, it would be wise to back up your data and perform a fresh installation of Windows 10.
