Do you know the advantages of using one of the Unifi Ethernet Surge Protectors compared to POE devices and switches? With a properly made ESD shielded cable, it seems reasonable to trade a $15 surge protector for a $200 switch. Your curiosity is welcome!

I believe you’d still need a PoE injector or switch in the line. This would be useful for devices placed outside, such as cameras or outdoor APs that might face lightning strikes, delivering a massive power spike. The surge protector would either absorb it or fail, but it would stop excess energy from reaching your home and protecting the injector/switch. It could also act in reverse—if your power supply experiences a surge, this device might help save your AP or camera from damage. But only after the surge has already destroyed everything else before it.

I understand I need the POE injector or switch, but I'm curious about their grounding performance. I'm planning to install the protectors as well, since I have sufficient on-site resources for this project.
