Yesterday a Telus worker visited my house trying to promote their new fiber internet service. They suggested switching me from Shaw and offered to cover the rest of my Shaw contract, proposing a plan priced $50 lower than my current one. I’m puzzled about this. I’m currently on Shaw 150, which was upgraded to 300 Mbps. The Telus representative claimed their fiber 75 plan is faster than my Shaw 300 plan. I don’t see how 75 Mbps fiber could be faster than a 300 Mbps cable connection. It seems I only receive about 10% of the value I’m paying for with Shaw, yet online speed tests show me consistently around 300 Mbps even during peak times from 5 pm to 9 pm. When asked if their speeds would improve, they didn’t mention any changes and simply stated they can only offer a 75 Mbps internet option. As for my usage, both of us stream and play games together. We chose Shaw 150 mainly because we hit data caps. Thank you for your assistance.
You're right, upload speed isn't the same as download speed. Just because it's 300 doesn't mean it's fast. Shaw's upload speeds aren't great either. You could upgrade for unlimited data by paying an extra $15 a month on Telus.
The Telus representative misled me in an attempt to close a deal. I’m not sharing specifics about my role, but I can confirm that colleagues at Bell, Telus, and Shaw often employ questionable sales methods or lack ethical standards when pursuing new clients. Ultimately, I recommend Shaw for its unlimited data, even though we previously experienced limited data charges before. Still, if you need quicker uploads, FTTH is the more suitable option now—especially while DOCSIS 3.1/4.0 becomes available.
Thanks for the update, Kirashi. I don’t worry about upload speed because I mainly play games and stream content. They seemed to exaggerate the speed even though I’m receiving more than advertised.
