Initiating the upgrade process...
I'm pretty sure you'd like a clean start with Windows 10. You can download the installer to a USB drive, but be careful—will it wipe everything on your USB? Once you boot from it, you'll go through the setup steps. It's not necessarily simpler than just downloading and installing; you might need to choose installation options carefully.
Start with the upgrade first. This ensures you receive your free MSA. Afterward, perform a clean install and enter the number when prompted. *Note: The process may take some time, but it’s better to do it. If you choose a clean install instead of upgrading first, you’ll need to buy an MSA. MSA (Microsoft Software Authentication) refers to what the poster described, not a clean install—just like a fresh setup.* Edited August 19, 2015 by SansVarnic

You can use the USB directly. Your dad already has a working copy of Windows 10 ready for you.
The USB can be used again, functioning similarly to a boot disk.
