The boot drive is a fresh SSD, yet an older HDD remains in use. The operating system was originally set up on the previous SSD, but my friend initially assumed the problem was with his drive and simply upgraded and reinstalled Windows (7!). We performed a BIOS update—still quite outdated—but ran memtest86 to test the RAM. The results look normal. However, the issue persists. When I first noticed it, I attempted to recreate the problem by powering off the PSU and waiting a few minutes. It wasn’t exactly eight minutes, but I’ll try that next.

I recall it was an MSI Z68A-G45 motherboard.

I was thinking of another detail: the board page shows an update note for version 12 and above stating that the ME8 update was applied. I’m not very familiar with MSI models, so I wasn’t sure what ME8 refers to. Additionally, in the BIOS there’s no option to show a post-process screen—only a logo setting exists, which when turned off leaves a black display.

we changed the computer today for 20 minutes and cut off the power to verify the memory cache was cleared. this should help recreate the problem, but it didn’t resolve it.

You recently received a faulty SSD that was turned off in Windows, which you didn’t even realize about. You planned to run a dual boot with Linux on it.
