Hi everyone, I'm setting up my first desktop PC. I'm curious if I can use my laptop's hard drive—including the processor, battery, and charger—plus the Windows 7 version still on it—for my desktop build. It has everything I need, and I'm using a genuine Windows 7 installation. I'm wondering if Windows will actually boot from this setup or if Windows 7 has some kind of hardware protection like Windows 10 does. If I can't make it work, I'll go with Windows 10; otherwise, I'll try to get it to function. Thanks, Jamie.

It functions properly as long as it isn't an OEM version of Windows 7.

It varies. Recent chip designs don’t back Windows 7 and probably won’t start. A new setup is probably the best option.

I'm not entirely confident about that. I received it second-hand from a friend who might have rearranged the HDD before. I'm pretty sure he likely viewed a lot of porn at that time, lol. Also, I'm planning to install a Ryzen 7 2700X.

You probably need to reinstall the operating system again. Alternatively, you can attempt to install version 10 with a Windows 7 key.

Windows starts about 95% of the time. If not, try Paragon Adaprive Restore 2010 USB for a quick fix. Your system may require a new serial key. For brand-new hardware, you'll also need a PS2 mouse and/or keyboard to install drivers, but once those issues are resolved, everything should function properly.

It functioned correctly, installing Windows 10 immediately upon startup without any issues. It’s authentic and not a fake version. No Windows detected in the corner.
