Initial PC setup fails to boot, only RAM indicators remain active
Hi guys, this is my first PC build I 've completed and I seem to be having booting issues after connecting all components together . . . Symptom : When powering on PC only the RGB from the ram lights up. After hitting the case power button it makes a slight click noise within the PS i believe but none of the Fans (Case, Gpu , Cpu cooler ) seem to spin at all which is super weird. My build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8LW2FZ Things I've tried so far : • Switching to different power outlets. • Jumped the front panel power with screwdriver (would get same outcoming as plugging in FP header to motherboard and pressing the power button). It makes a slight click noise within the PS but none of the Fans (Case, Gpu , Cpu cooler ) seem to spin still. • Taking out all of my 4 RAM sticks and reseating them ensuring they click in properly. • Pulling out 2 of my 4 RAM sticks and using slots 2 and 4 . Tried slots 1 and 3 as well. • Tried 1 Ram at each slot . • Checked the manual of my Motherboard to see the which headers my CPU cooler should be connected to (CPU _Fan header and Sys _Fan4 _Pump ) made sure they're plugged properly. • Reseated my GPU . • Confirmed CPU cables were not mixed up with PCIe cables from my Corsair RM750 power supply to the motherboard connectors (2 Cpu cables used and connected to my Motherboard and 3 Pcie cables to connect to my gpu 16 pin connector ) . • Unplugged all Power connections from my motherboard AND on the PS end then re -plugged ensuring they all clicked in properly. • Successfully updated motherboard's BIOS via Q-Flash. • Cleared CMOS. • Reseated CPU and checked for any bent pins. RMA'd motherboard (same outcome). Tested with 850w PS (same outcome). I'm leaning towards it being a Motherboard or CPU issue.. But all of these components are brand new out of the box. If you have any ideas and suggestions pls let me know . I 've been troubleshooting for quite some time now :c
Remove the GPU and test with just one dimmer. Check the power supply using a paperclip test to rule out issues there. Since you managed to flash the BIOS, it’s unlikely the problem is there.
Thanks for the idea! I removed the GPU and used just one dimmer, but the result was still the same.
Ensure the system is properly powered without any illumination. Only the RAM sticks are visible upon startup.
Received replacement motherboard with B650 instead of B650e, tested previously and consistently got the same result. Later tried with 850W PS unit, same outcome occurred. The system would click once inside the PS and only activate the RGB lighting on the RAM. It’s puzzling why the RMA board isn’t working properly despite these tests.
Solution: Through extensive troubleshooting, it became clear the problem was a PCIe cable I borrowed from a nearby shop because I didn’t have three Corsair models... (two were genuine and one was an odd replacement). The store claimed they shipped three units, but I might have misplaced mine, thinking only two arrived. It was simply the PCIe cable that needed swapping. Surprising how that single part stopped everything from working.
