The CPU should be pressed into the socket and spread evenly. A GPU or exposed die section without a heat spreader requires this. For extra caution, I always add a dot in the middle to ensure everything fits properly. Also, applying too much thermal paste isn’t a problem—it just creates unnecessary issues.
