You recently placed your old laptop HDD inside a SATA enclosure following an SSD upgrade, and now it's being used for storing archives and other data.

I collected several 1-2TB storage devices from my old setup and used NTFS for Mac to relocate my music and code to a new drive I purchased. After reformatting, one of them now serves as my time machine. I’m preparing to move everything to a file server soon, which could bring the challenges back again.

I used the NAS option for time machine backups and other tasks. It won’t fit in my hands at work, making it less convenient than a Thunderbolt drive, though it works fine for media storage. The Synology DS416 is what I’m using.

The best method for keeping things is still using standard hard drives with built-in functionality.

Promise PegasusR6 offers 12TB RAID-5 storage, while the Pegasus2 R2+ provides 8TB RAID-0. The latter is set up as a time machine backup for your MacBook Pro and the RAID configuration.

You can choose any hard drive you prefer. The only thing matters is the file structure. If your operating system is Mac, you'll need to use a Mac Journalized format.

Do you believe those Thunderbolt drives are a good value? I’ve often thought they’re quite expensive.
