Increased resolution from 3800x to 5800x, temperatures rising to 90º under identical settings
Hey! Yesterday my new 5800x arrived and I switched it from my original 3800x. The rest of the setup looks good: Asus x470 Strix F with latest BIOS, Noctua NHU12A, Phanteks Enthoo Pro M case with open side and four 14cm fans, Seasonic Focus+ 650W, RTX3070, DDR4 3600CL16 Bdie. I only changed the CPU and noticed very high temperatures—around 67°C on BIOS, 55°C in Windows idle, and Cinebench reaching 90% with throttling. With my 3800x I was at about 75°C under the same configuration. I tried different thermal pastes (NHU1, Artic MX4, various spreads), but only the paste with spread application helped a lot. My motherboard is showing 1.25V for 4.4GHz when running Cinebench. Is that normal? Could my IHS be faulty? Should I consider returning it for exchange? Thanks a lot!
Have you considered reapplying thermal paste and reinstalling the cooler?
Usually the clock speeds and performance appear a bit lower than expected, but temperatures stayed consistent when switching from 3700X to 5800X. It's typical on 5800X to consider an RMA if needed. I faced the same problem and received an upgrade to 5900X that performed better.
However, I can't agree to this when others aren’t hitting 90º on stock at full load. Still, staying idle between 50-60º and 67º on the UEFI with a Noctua cooler seems off, doesn’t it? After reapplying thermal paste, I took a photo of the heatsink—I think there’s a clear convexity in the IHS. Did you file a return to AMD directly or through the store? Thanks!
It operates smoothly at default configurations with PBO turned on and all power limits disabled. In gaming it stays around 70-75°C, while Cinebench R20 can hit up to 88°C. This performance is achieved in a Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic case equipped with nine fans and a 360mm Corsair AIO cooler. The thermal paste used is Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, indicating a high-end build that still maintains elevated temperatures. Idle temperatures aren't a concern, and voltages tend to be quite high on Ryzen processors during idle states. When browsing the web, it reaches 45-60°C as well.
We need to run at 60-80% capacity using premium air or an AIO, along with AMD states. I believe both of us have a minor issue there.
These numbers work only when your processor runs at full stock performance, without PBO active and within the specified power limits. My setup doesn’t meet those conditions because I’ve lifted the restrictions, allowing higher temperatures. Various tasks also affect how the CPU operates—different workloads use distinct instruction sets, and tools like Cinebench can increase heat, for example during AIDA64’s stress tests where temperatures rarely reach 80°C.
However in my setup I’m using full stock and PBO is turned off. Still PPT hits 140W while stock PPT is 105W? Perhaps I should cap it at 105W and test the effect? Could be an issue with my motherboard that’s overclocking even without me doing it... Thanks! Edited May 7, 2021 by rul3s
