Increase the display quality to 1440p on a 1080p screen.
I'm experiencing issues with older games on a 1080p 27-inch G27F using an RX6800. Even with ultra settings, textures remain grainy, particularly around hair and edges. Switching to virtual resolution helped render up to 4K or 1440p on my screen, but the visual quality dropped noticeably. The main drawback seems to be blurriness in the rendered frames beyond just frame rate loss.
The upscaling merely increases the render resolution. It functions similarly to enhanced anti-aliasing. Textures remain unchanged. Improvements in textures require modifications such as mods, or a post-processing sharpening filter might offer some assistance.
Study true type and clear type/subpixel display to understand the basics. Essentially, shrinking an image won’t keep fonts sharp, so achieving good quality is challenging.
