Hello everyone, I've been looking for a new CPU and here are my choices: Ryzen 7 5700x3d at 220€, Ryzen 9 5900x for 240€, and Ryzen 9 5950x priced at 300€. My current setup is maxed out, and my specs are still below what I need. I have a Corsair Performance RM850w PSU, an MSI MPG X570 motherboard, G.Skill Ripjaws RAM (64GB, 3200MT/s), and an Adata XPG SX8200 GPU with an XFX Radeon RX 7900 XT 20GB. I mostly do 3D rendering, run many background apps, and play at 1440p 144Hz. I'm unsure whether to upgrade to the AM4 socket or just pick something that works for me. The price gap isn't huge, so spending over 300€ shouldn't be an issue.

For 1440p, the 3D cache is no longer beneficial. Ideal for flight sims and high-speed FPS games in 1080p eSports titles. Your cooler wasn't mentioned—if it meets your needs, go with the 5950X for the core count.

Choose the 5900 or 5950x configuration for the additional core count that significantly impacts background processes and 3D rendering. Running games at 1440p will deliver an excellent experience with this setup.

I’m confident the cooling will work well. Could you share your thoughts? I’ve got an Arctic Liquid Freezer III 240 and a 6x ARCTIC P12 PWM PST 120mm fan.

These seem to be the top choices, though I’m not entirely confident about using the 5950x. It’s just a bit more expensive by 60€.

Your project relies on heavy multithreading. A 5700X3D won't outperform a 3900X in that context, though a 5950X would clearly be better. If gaming was your main goal, you'd choose the 5700X3D, but this isn't focused on multithreading improvements.

The resolution doesn’t affect CPU speed. If your goal is a certain frames per second and you can tweak graphics settings to hit that number, the important factor is whether your CPU can sustain it. Yes, using a midrange card while playing high or ultra with a powerful GPU usually works fine—it depends on the situation. But people should stop confusing CPU performance with resolution choices. A 7900 XT will perform well in many games, especially with X3D, even at higher settings. If you mainly play battle royale or other non-e-sports shooters, X3D adds value; otherwise, it varies per game. I recommend upgrading to X3D for gaming from a 3900X, even if it’s just 5700X3D, as long as it fits your budget. You wouldn’t invest that much in a CPU right now. If you rely heavily on 3D software and need multi-threading because GPU acceleration isn’t possible, the answer depends on your specific tasks.

I focus on handling several tasks at once since I run many programs throughout the day, making it hard to decide where to place my attention.

Describe it as having background programs active, some of which perform real tasks and others simply waiting to use the CPU.

The games I enjoy have some unusual twists. Age of Mythology Retold, The Finals, Path of Exile 2, Elite Dangerous, Space Engineers 2 are on my list for the future. Maybe I’ll try Star Citizen someday.
