I wasn't sure whether to bring this up under troubleshooting, computer hardware, or another area. Please accept my apologies if this isn’t the ideal spot for this discussion, or if I should have posted elsewhere. I tried a quick search but didn’t find anything that covered all parts of my concern. Of course, there’s always a chance I missed some keywords. I don’t need detailed specs since this feels more general, and it doesn’t seem tied to any particular hardware. This might seem odd or minor, but I’m interested in how a misaligned DIMM affects things. For example, if the module is installed correctly but not all pins connect, what happens? Would the system either start but fail to recognize it, or would it trigger a POST error with a diagnostic code (like a beep or light)? Are there any risks of damage to other parts? Also, what would happen if the DIMM was placed upside down or rotated? The keying prevents proper seating, so it shouldn’t fit. If some contacts worked initially, does that change anything? Looking at the DDR4 pin layout, most connections are for data transfer, while others handle power and ground. Is there built-in protection against these issues? Does this vary depending on the motherboard design? Would it simply fail completely?
