as mentioned, one of the USB 3 headers on my motherboards is missing and it won’t power a 1 tb hdd. when i connect my drive, it works but after a short while the connection drops. could this issue be due to the broken pin? what does the IntA_P2_SSTX+ pin actually do? it seems to support my wireless mouse and keyboard dongle without any problems.
IntA_P2_SSTX+ is part of the USB3 data connection. It seems likely that without it, the system will fall back to USB2, though I'm not certain. I haven't seen a USB header missing just one pin before. Are you attempting to power off the HDD using this USB port? Not every USB port supports that function.
I'm confirming it functions well too. It worked smoothly on another machine I tested (H87-G43 gaming) and my main PC's motherboard (B450 A-Pro Max). The drive uses a 2.5" HDD connected via an Orico adapter to USB 3.0. The motherboard with the damaged USB header is an AS-H91HDS.
Consider using one of the rear USB ports for the HDD. These adapters need more power, and front ports often deliver less than rear ones.
It might be that the Header isn't transferring at 90 Mb/s anymore. I also updated my earlier response.
This is speculation, I do not know how USB handles missing pins with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 One of the ports will not run at USB 3.0 speeds and will be limited to USB 2.0 speeds, the other should work fine.
USB3 requires four signal wires or data lines whereas USB2 needs two. The USB3 connector supports eight data lines for two connections (two USB plugs). You might inspect the front panel PCB to see if you can modify it for an alternative USB3 connection on that plug or socket. If not, it seems you're limited. Often pins are removed when not needed, as they usually aren't essential, so altering them could affect performance.
