Incorporating Ram sticks into MOBO with the same maker and CL but varying release dates
I was considering buying fresh G.Skill Trident Z Neo sticks with tighter speeds, but I don’t want to remove the existing ones just to keep them in storage. Could there be any problems if I try to fit older RAM into slots that are otherwise identical except for timing differences? I prefer having all slots filled with the same type of RAM for consistency and look. My current setup uses timings 16-19-19-39, while the new kit would be 16-16-16-36.
There's a slight chance it won't work, but most likely it will. In any case, if you mix different sticks, your RAM will work at the lowest common speed/highest common latency, negating your reason for buying tighter timings in the first place. You can always try overclocking the sticks. But if your old sticks can run at the tighter timing, you've essentially lost the reason to upgrade in the first place. Aside from that, you're very unlikely to notice a difference between 16-19-19-39 and 16-16-16-36 in anything other than benchmark numbers.
You have a Ryzen 7 5800X with a Tuf Gaming x570 Wi-Fi connection.
I need to verify the BIOS settings to confirm the current clock speeds. It seems I recall a different timing configuration from my previous BIOS version.
I plan to keep things simple with two sticks right now. CPU-Z showed a CL of 26 by chance. After adjusting BIOS settings, the CL improved to 16-16-16-36. I was concerned about the RAM I bought from Micro Center, thinking it might be faulty, but it seems the DOCP profile was missed during previous BIOS changes. It looks like I don’t need more RAM—thanks for the reminder, G.Skill! Corsair’s offering blank RAM sticks could be a great solution.
