The best AM4 choices for gaming are the 5700X, 5700X3D and 5800X3D. These are meant for enhancing older AM4 setups. AMD is reportedly launching AM4 XT CPUs in the future, which will offer higher clock speeds and better performance for Ryzen 5000 non-x3d models.
Purchased my 5900x on eBay used for around 150 USD a while ago, though it had a few bent pins. If you already have AM4 hardware, I’d simply browse the used market for CPUs—there are plenty of good deals. Otherwise, I’m not confident in recommending any DDR4 platforms, as DDR5 represents a significant upgrade going forward.
