Are you certain the files weren’t just present on your machine from someone who used it before? It seems unlikely such activity would happen in just ten minutes or during regular browsing. I suspect the individuals attempting to access your computer are also from a previous source, though I’m not sure. Also, my confidence in Windows security updates is low—based on the detection rate of MSE and Windows Defender, it doesn’t seem like Microsoft excels at security.
For that reason, I won’t include any updates or security patches, including those for malicious software.
It seems the system ran an outdated version of Windows. I didn’t express doubt about their usefulness, just that their effectiveness is questionable. I’m also interested in whether this occurs during a new XP installation with modern browsers like Chrome or Firefox. (Did you use Internet Explorer for this?)
It's not a terrible operating system, though it's quite old and not up-to-date. Unless the user takes additional precautions like blocking peers and installing other software, it can turn quite risky for them. I'd really worry about cookie reuse when using XP.
I was also running Nightly, and I really question whether switching to another web browser would actually improve security against threats. If it did, it would likely offer only minimal benefits. Personally, I don’t believe changing browsers would significantly impact my protection.
Sure, I've saved all three service packs and applied every security update. I removed unnecessary files such as Bing and similar items.
