Improving your system's memory capacity.
Hello everyone, I’m considering a RAM upgrade to boost my system’s speed. After some research, I’m thinking about switching from my current DDR4 2666 16GB to either 16GB or 32GB at 3600MHz. I want to know if this approach is worthwhile or if another component should be addressed first. My CPU, a Ryzen 5 2600, will likely need an upgrade soon, but I’m unsure which part to tackle first. Performance-wise, I’m not seeing consistent frame rates—especially in demanding games like Tarkov and Apex Legends. At 1440p with low settings, my Apex score hovers around 140, while I often drop below 60 in Tarkov. Any advice would be really helpful! My current setup includes an ASUS TUF 3070ti motherboard with a 16GB DDR4 2666 GB RAM, 850W power supply, GSKILL Rip Saw, and a Seasons 850 motherboard.
2666MHz runs a bit slow, so faster RAM might offer some improvement. It won't fix every issue. At 1440p and those frame rates, the CPU isn't under much pressure. Keep in mind Zen+ struggles with speeds above 3200MHz. If you plan to upgrade the CPU, aim for around 3600MHz, but be ready to lower the clock speed until the CPU is updated.
It seems the best approach would be to upgrade both components together. As a self-learner, you might prefer not to downclock RAM right now. Regarding BIOS updates, yes, you typically need to install the latest version after installing the new hardware to ensure proper recognition.
For the X470, an upgrade is likely required unless you've updated it before. With a Ryzen 5000, AGESA 1.2 or newer is necessary. Verify your current BIOS version on your motherboard manufacturer's site to check compatibility. If it lacks support, proceed with the upgrade.
