Checking compatibility for your Intel I5-4440 with the Gigabyte ga-b85m-hd3. Upgrading to 2x8GB sticks should be possible, but confirm the specifications match your needs.

Mentioned on their page for the motherboard: "- Two 1.5V DDR3 DIMM slots can hold up to 16 GB of system memory. Because of a Windows 32-bit operating system constraint, if more than 4 GB is installed, the shown memory size will be smaller than the actual installed amount. - Uses dual channel memory design - Compatible with DDR3 1600/1333 MHz modules - Works with Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory cards. As long as it's not SODIMM, it should fit (your laptop models often have smaller sizes)."

Be cautious with "AMD" memory chips, since they might offer greater density and varied timing that Intel CPUs can't handle. Opt for a standard DDR3 module instead, to be safe. It's better to simply install the memory rather than swap it out, so you can achieve 24GB.
