Ever since I began playing Minecraft about seven years ago, I always played with my left hand—it felt more natural for me at the time. However, now that I’m spending a lot of my gaming time on first-person shooters like Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, and Valorant, I feel a bit at a disadvantage because my right hand is constantly stuck on the keyboard. While I’d say my aim is pretty solid currently, I'm wondering how to adjust and get comfortable aiming with my right hand on the mouse. Of course, I realize that my aim might initially suffer a bit as I adapt, and I don’t want to completely derail the experience by constantly dying. So, could anyone offer some advice on how I can gradually get used to aiming with my right hand?

It really comes down to repetition – just keep practicing, and you’ll get there. You need to work on your coordination too.

As a right-handed mouse user, I have a somewhat unusual history with controls. For years, I was stuck using the default arrow keys to move and Ctrl or Alt for shooting in games. That all started when I began playing Doom and Wolf 3D, where those shortcuts were the norm. Eventually, without realizing it, I simply shifted over to using the same sides with my mouse. Now, I’ve been relying on keypad keys for a long time – and even using the surrounding keys, including the arrow keys themselves, as extra buttons or ways to select weapons with my thumb. I wouldn’t change a thing about it at all.

Why are you using your right hand for the keyboard? The ‘WASD’ keys remain in their usual location, and you're simply reaching for them from a different angle. If the spacebar is causing trouble, you could easily remap keys like Ctrl/Windows/Alt to act as space. Alternatively, if you don’t need a full keyboard while gaming, consider getting a separate game controller.
