Improving the CPU performance
Improving the CPU performance
Your current setup includes a Ryzen 5 3600 with 16GB DDR4 RAM and an upgraded RX6800XT GPU. The store suggested replacing the motherboard because it won’t support full CPU performance, advising you to swap it out. You’re considering upgrading to a 5800X3D CPU and adding more RAM. Since your board may not handle the new CPU fully, you should be cautious about power consumption and performance gains. The upgrade could work if done properly, but ensure you follow the recommended specifications for stability.
Very little variation exists. The change won’t be obvious. They’re primarily focused on boosting sales beyond just the CPU. Ensure you upgrade the BIOS before installing the new CPU. https://www.asus.com/uk/motherboards-com...ME-B450M-A
Thank you for your response. I also considered they might be trying to sell me a motherboard, since my motherboard's BIOS is all up-to-date. I plan to purchase another fan to increase airflow near the CPU and assist in keeping them cool.
The tech offered sensible advice. The Prime board usually throttles performance significantly when TDP is high, though it’s not impossible to fix. The main issue is insufficient cooling—adding small 80/92 fans on the VRM/MOSFET section is a smart move, especially with undervolt settings. It just looks cluttered, which is why recommendations often point to the 5600 model, which could slow down any card faster than the 6800XT at lower resolutions like 1440p. Alternatively, upgrading to an LGA1700 board that supports DDR4 and runs faster than most AM4 chips would be a better long-term solution.
