Improving the CPU performance
Improving the CPU performance
Hello everyone, I hope you're enjoying a pleasant day. Recently, I've been playing CPU-intensive games such as Timberborn, Infraspace, and Cities: Skylines. I'm considering upgrading my CPU. Additionally, I use my PC for .NET and Python development, so there are other benefits too.
Hi, I'm currently using: ASUS PRIME B550-PLUS Ryzen 5 3600, RX 5700 XT, 32GB RAM at 3600 MHz. Would a Ryzen 9 5900X fit with these specs? Should I look into a better motherboard? Or might a lower-end CPU be more suitable?
What I have: CPU price (CZK) converted to USD
- AMD Ryzen 3 4100: 2,559.00 CZK → $100.70
- AMD Ryzen 5 4500: 2,990.00 CZK → $117.66
- AMD Ryzen 5 5500: 3,290.00 CZK → $129.46
- AMD Ryzen 5 5600: 4,290.00 CZK → $168.81
- AMD Ryzen 5 5600G: 4,090.00 CZK → $160.94
- AMD Ryzen 5 5600X: 5,490.00 CZK → $216.03
- AMD Ryzen 7 5700G: 6,790.00 CZK → $267.19
- AMD Ryzen 7 5800X: 7,990.00 CZK → $314.41
- AMD Ryzen 9 5900X: 10,990.00 CZK → $432.46
- AMD Ryzen 9 5950X: 15,390.00 CZK → $605.60
Let me know your thoughts!
Choose 5800X3D for demanding gaming tasks—it delivers strong performance and should handle your needs better than the 5900X in many situations. It's unclear how much of the CPU is dedicated to .NET and Python, but if your tests show cores/threads running near 95% or higher, the 5900X might be more suitable. Otherwise, the 5800X3D will offer better power.
I’d choose the Ryzen 7 5700X myself. Since I’m a developer, it works well for both gaming and coding tasks.
Seconded the 5700x, appears to offer the optimal mix of speed and cost. The 5800x3d is pricier than needed for a mid-range gaming setup. 5900x works well but is excessive for the budget.
Top score for overall performance = 5900X
Best value for money = 5700X
Just a note: Please verify you're using 1080p, otherwise you might face GPU limitations.
Used it with a 1080p 75Hz screen, but now have a 1440p 165Hz one. Looking for GPU upgrade suggestions—prefer AMD but open to Nvidia if it makes sense in Linux. I mainly play e-sports and city/economy sims, so GPU pressure isn’t a big issue. I’m not sure if my new display is being used to its full capacity.
I would hold off on the new RX7000 line because it's set to release in a few months. If you're looking to upgrade soon, the 6900XT is presently a solid option in the US, available for around $700.
