If you locate a Ryzen 7 3800X near the same cost as the Ryzen 7 3700X, I’d choose the 3800X. It includes a better built-in cooler, offers more room for overclocking, and starts with a higher base clock than the 3700X—even without overclocking. Plus, it can boost itself automatically when conditions are right, like having enough power and cooling.
I own a used aftermarket cooler with ample airflow for overclocking. For more demanding gaming, I simply play tougher titles at 1080p.
Thanks to the improved CPU cooler and the increased TDP to 105 (up from 65 as on the 3700X), it’s probable you can push a 3800X further than you could with a 3700X. Even with an aftermarket cooler, the 3800X remains a more stable and higher-performing option compared to the 3700X, especially during consistent overclocking. If you locate a 3800X priced similarly to the 3700X, it still doesn’t justify keeping the older model, no matter the cooling upgrade.
