My setup includes an i7 8700k, ASUS Maximus HERO X, RTX 2080 ti FE, Corsair 1000w RMi, 16gb Patriot Viper 3200. I've been trying to overclock and read about the 8700k overheating quickly. Despite setting the CPU to 5000 MHz and running games at 4k with max settings at a steady 60FPS, temperatures never exceeded 70°C. Did I do something right or was I lucky with a good CPU?

My system specifications include an i7 8700k, ASUS Maximus HERO X, RTX 2080 ti FE, Corsair 1000w RMi, 16gb Patriot Viper 3200. I've begun testing overclocking and found that the CPU reaches 5000 MHz while maintaining 4k at max settings with stable 60FPS. Temperatures have stayed below 70°C during gaming. It seems my setup is performing well without overheating. The 8700k is considered a cooler model compared to others.

70c at 5ghz performs quite well. It feels like you've secured a great deal. Have fun with your reward.

My system specifications include an i7 8700k, ASUS Maximus HERO X, RTX 2080 ti FE, Corsair 1000w RMi, 16gb Patriot Viper 3200. I've begun trying out overclocking and read extensively about the 8700k overheating quickly. I've successfully used ASUS BIOS to push the CPU to 5000 MHz while gaming at 4K resolution with maximum settings, maintaining a steady 60FPS without exceeding 70°C. Am I doing it correctly, or did I simply get a very efficient CPU? Is the 70°C reading from gaming sessions typical, or is it during stress testing? If it's during gaming, your chip might be running too hot slightly. The 8700k is actually quite cool compared to higher-end models like the 9700k and 9900k. Generally, what people discuss refers to the average core temperature measured in stress tests. A common benchmark is Prime95 version 26.6 with a small FFT analysis. Running this test while monitoring temperatures via software like HWmonitor or CoreTemp will show you the CPU load at full capacity and how the temperature spikes significantly beyond gaming sessions. This happens because gaming doesn't consistently push the 8700k to its maximum power draw as stress tests do. In real-world use, you wouldn't usually hit such high temperatures. Still, it's wise to know the upper limit your chip can reach under extreme conditions to avoid any throttling.
