Improved resolution from 5800x3d to 7800x3d, but performance noticeably decreased.
I recently upgraded my computer from 5800x3d to 7800x3d, but noticed no real gains—games actually ran about 20-30% slower. It seems my 7900xt might be too large for the main PCI slot due to limited space behind it. I moved it to one of the other slots: the second one is designed for PCI4x16 with X16 mode, and the third is for PCI4x16 in single mode. I’m pretty sure this is the issue, and I’m not utilizing my GPU’s full potential. Could anyone help me out? Thanks a lot!
Have you restored Windows? For a 7900X, the CPU upgrade shouldn’t be easily noticeable since a 5800X3D remains a high-end processor.
Second position may remain an X16 configuration, utilizing a chiplet approach instead of a direct connection to the CPU, constrained by shared bandwidth. Check 3DMark for performance trends.
I understand this won’t significantly boost your performance, but I shouldn’t expect a major improvement either. I’m not reinstalling Windows right now, and I’m not sure if that’s the best approach. Thanks again.
I assume you're wondering about the compatibility of a 7900X with PCIe 4x1. Which motherboard are you considering?
It's a great situation when I had an ITX model in the case, but not here on this M-ATX board. Maybe I could get a riser and do something with it. (But a fresh case and reinstalling the windows would be the better choice) Still, I'm determined to try and make it work.
Hardware Unboxed conducted an extensive evaluation of several B650 boards, and all Asus Prime B650 models received a negative rating, described as "they all suck and should be avoided." Just a note: pairing a top-tier CPU and GPU with the cheapest motherboard is usually not a good match. It's similar to fitting a Ferrari engine in a Nissan Micra.
