Hey everyone, I've been following AMD Ryzen 5000 for a while and decided to join today to share thoughts with fellow enthusiasts about the AMD 5800X thermals. My main worry is that while the CPU cooler feels cool to the touch, the chip itself reaches 86°C in Cinebench R23 and 90°C in Prime95. I was hoping the heatsink would register around 40-50°C during benchmarking, which suggests the thermal paste might not be doing its job effectively in moving heat from that tiny chiplet to the heatsink. I'm curious about how much improvement I could see with products like Thermal Grizzly (Conductonaut or Kryonaut).

After the upgrade, my system includes: AMD Ryzen 5800X Gigabyte Aorus Elite Ax V2 (bios update needed), G.Skill Flare X 3200MHz CL14 RAM, Be Quiet Shadow Rock TF2, ASUS GTX960, Strix (from previous build), Fractal Design Meshify, and Seasonic Platinum 650W. My current Cinebench R23 score is 15806, with the CPU hitting 86°C and a boost of about 4.6 GHz across all cores. I've experimented with PBO2 and undervolting, and the results look promising—stable performance with a slight negative curve offset. Overall, it seems like a solid setup!

I expect the CPU cooler to feel hot to the touch if my CPU cooler was the issue? This is what is so surprising/ worrying..

The base temperatures aren't excessively high; it's probably just a small 1-2 degree variation. By then, I'm more focused on your cooler's performance.

You may see a slight boost using tools like TG Kryonaut, but nothing significant. Guru3D has evaluated both Kryonaut and be quiet's DC1 TIM, which they likely include with their coolers. Their tests indicate a 2.5°C drop in CPU temperature when switching to Kryonaut from DC1. Spoiler: It’s probably not worth it. Generally, the gaps between quality TIMs aren’t huge, and you’re unlikely to perceive a real difference. Having extra thermal paste handy might be useful later if you need to reapply it elsewhere. Conductonaut offers a more substantial temperature reduction, though liquid metal adds extra complexity—those temps could be higher, possibly even worse. The 5800X runs hot, and the Shadow Rock TF2 isn’t particularly efficient at cooling. Are you adjusting voltage or using it at its default settings?

My Le Grand Macho RT competes directly with the D15, and my new cooler surpasses it in performance aside from sound quality. It's quite impressive. As for recommendations, I'm not sure what to choose. You'll need more than just TIM to maintain optimal temperatures. Consider enhancing airflow in your case, which might help a bit.

I have two 120mm intake fans and one 120mm with a 140mm exhaust in an open Meshify case, which allows heat to exit easily. @Mateyyy I’m currently using PBO2 for underclocking, which raised the stable core boost to 4.6 GHz and improved the R23 Cinebench score to 15806 compared to CPU-Monkey. Still, I feel limited in overclocking potential given these temperatures.

I understand your point. I own a 320w and 360w cooler, both work for my 3770K, 3600XT, and 5600X at the same temps. They’re decent but struggle under full load. Those same units on my X5690 start to overheat, and the gauge shows intense strain. My new cooler is different—my CPU still heats up at full load, but I boosted my clock speed to 100MHz with the same temperatures as before. Now I can hit 4900MHz, whereas I previously managed around 4800 on other setups. In Meshify C, I’m running 3x120x38s front, a TY-143 at the top intake, TY-147B at the rear exhaust, and 120x38 rear exhaust. All CFM details are noted. Edit: Another case I can share is with LGMRT and TS140P—Linpack Xtreme runs at 4600MHz with 1.25v, achieving mid-80s loads. On FC140, it’s 4700MHz @ 1.2875v, delivering low-80s performance.

As you mentioned, not any of my runs keeps my heatsinks from getting warm. Just the old CPU from the first generation i7 does.
