Initially let's review the situation. My current setup includes a desktop with an i5-2500K processor, 24 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a GTX 970 server. Recently I had to expand my RAM from 24 GB to 32 GB on the desktop due to instability and crashes in my VM. The server now runs at 32 GB of DDR3. I’m considering a switch to a more powerful machine for development—something like a Ryzen 7 3700X on an X570, paired with an RTX 2700 Super, and possibly similar specs for the server without a GPU.

I’m also thinking about upgrading my server’s RAM soon, as I anticipate needing more capacity in the near future. My current plan is to wait until Q2, buy new gear, and resell it later to get into a better phase of the upgrade cycle. The challenge is balancing cost, availability, and timing, especially since used parts are harder to find in New Zealand.

The shipping cost for an RMA from NZ to Ireland is around 80 NZD, which adds up. I’m also concerned about missing out on DDR4 technology, as it seems like the next big shift is toward DDR5. I want a smooth upgrade path without being locked into buying everything again, especially given the current market in the Pacific region.

My thoughts: Should I hold off and wait for a better time, or should I invest now in my desktop to enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 and maybe tackle server upgrades sooner?
