Hello, I own a Ryzen 5 from 2018 that sometimes runs slowly. I record nature sounds and process large 32-bit audio files that take many hours. I’m considering a modest upgrade—probably a CPU boost and more M2 storage would help. I currently have an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 with AM4 socket, PrimoCache caching, a 4GB RAM module, and a 265 SSD. The mainboard is B450 TOMAHAWK. My plan is to install a full AM4 CPU and add a big M2 slot in the PCIe 2.0 x4 space. I’m curious if a Ryzen 7 5800X would be a better fit.
To keep VRM temperatures under control, you might need to increase airflow inside the case. The single M.2 drive has been idle for quite some time—unexpected since it could have helped with performance. Don’t worry, this drive should still work fine; it won’t slow things down much. I missed this opportunity a few months ago when I needed more storage.
The mainboard includes the operating system. I’ll switch the second M2 for my audio projects. Cooling is a consideration; I hadn’t realized I rely on a Corsair 3x120mm AIO to keep the CPU cool, and everything runs quietly so I expect some buffer.
Are you overlooking something? The documentation shows only one M.2 slot, not a second M.2. It appears only one is listed in both the manual and the specifications, while the specs page mentions it too. You seem to have only SATA ports available for storage. Have you shared your correct motherboard model?

Another upgrade to an M.2 slot isn't possible since your motherboard only allows one M.2 interface. The next choices are SATA SSDs, and you'll need to consider the total number you can install. Also, verify whether adding M.2 slots would reduce the available SATA ports, which seems likely—only four slots are feasible. Based on this, I suggest using SSDs with at least one TB of capacity, prioritizing cache performance.
