I’m interested in exploring upgrade options for my older GPU and components. I’d like to focus on maximizing performance while staying within budget. It would be helpful to see what improvements are possible with a new GPU, RAM, and power supply. I’m considering my current setup: an EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3, MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon with a 7700K (liquid metal), and Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (2x16GB). I’m thinking about replacing the GPU, PSU, and RAM, and possibly upgrading the CPU and motherboard. Since my rig runs a full custom loop, I’m trying to address recent games that seem more CPU-dependent than GPU-bound. I’ve experimented with CPU overclocking, but anything above 4.6 cores feels risky—my system already crashes frequently when I power it down. It might be a matter of days or months before it fails completely. I’m planning to upgrade the CPU and install new cooling components.

For an upgrade, aim for at least the 10th generation; if you're after the latest, choose the 12th or higher. That decision depends on whether you want cutting-edge features or a more traditional build. The 12th might also need a new chipset.

I’m leaning toward AMD options like the 5600x, 5800x or 5900x. The 12th gen is pretty pricey right now, and I haven’t decided to switch to Windows 11 yet. I’d rather wait for stability before upgrading. I’m likely still saving until late February or early March when I can afford it. I play games, record, do light video editing, and just browse the web or use the internet. I’m thinking about waiting a bit longer to see if AMD releases new chips or AM5 connectors.

If you have time, wait it out. There’s always something fresh and quicker coming around the next corner. But if you’re pressed for time, go for a Ryzen or a 12th generation Intel processor.
