I just swapped out the SSD in my HP 285 g3 Microtower (Ryzen 5 2400g with a B350 board) since the cheaply priced one failed. Thanks for the discount, I picked a Crucial P5 Plus 500 gb. Everything seems to be running, but it didn’t feel like a big upgrade compared to the old drive, even though specs suggest higher speeds. I ran some tests and both CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD reported around 1500 mb/s for sequential reads, which is below the expected over 6000 mb/s. I checked HWinfo to confirm the NVME slot was using x4, but it was. Any thoughts on what might be wrong? Could it be a bad SSD or just limitations from the motherboard? Appreciate your help.
You can't reach 6000 mb/s since your motherboard and CPU don't have PCIe 4.0 support.
B350 doesn't support Gen 4 needed for 6000 Mb/s speeds; it can only reach around 3000 Mb/s with Gen 3 x4. It's possible you're using Gen 2 which gives about 1500 Mb/s. Try disabling ASPM in the BIOS if possible, as it might affect PCIe performance. Ensure your drive is placed in the NVMe slot nearest to the CPU if not already positioned correctly. Also, 1500 Mb/s likely isn't a major bottleneck—focus more on latency and I/O requirements.
