Ah well, most of it wasn't required, and if it was, it never really slowed me down much. But I remember it could be a bit bothersome at times, hehe... Still, it can be worth it if you're curious about what happens. Overall, it's just a game focused on exploration. I recall mapping the desert was one of the highlights—it really helped me understand where things were later on. I also want to note that I don't like the current version; I think it should start from the original disc, version 1.0. Square Enix made some strange changes afterward (they basically "Final Fantasy'd" it), and honestly, even those small tweaks feel like bugs.
Gothic was the initial genuine 3D action-RPG I encountered. Twenty years later, an excellent unofficial prequel emerged—The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos. A free Gothic 2 mod matches Skyrim's Enderal in quality. The controls remain solid, yet the experience and setting feel just as authentic as before.
Also worth noting are Drakengard 3, Resonance Of Fate, Killer Is Dead, Lolipop Chainsaw, VA-11 Hall-A... These titles may be a bit dated, but they remain timeless. They highlight how graphics have stayed consistent over the past decade or so, especially compared to older games that handled things like environmental effects and physics in a unique way—something that feels outdated now with modern features like ray tracing.
