Hi. I'm drawn to the PS5 because of its ease of use. You can jump into a game in just seconds. I'm curious if it's feasible to enjoy a console-like feel on Windows. Something similar to how Steam launched with a quick shortcut, but also able to include libraries from other systems. Having apps open without hassle is really important to me. Playnite is on my list, though it doesn't quite match the console vibe.
Steam OS on GOG Galaxy offers a console version with reduced frame rates, less impressive visuals, and upscaling features. Additional challenges include PC system updates, game patches, server outages, and other technical issues.
Besides the various launch options you mention, what really affects the experience is how difficult it is to start a game after launching steam, especially if it doesn’t auto-launch. I’m wondering why this feels so frustrating compared to console play, where everything is designed for quick access and straightforward controls on a controller.
Describe what you want to achieve by recreating the PC experience on a modern console. Focus on replicating the ability to play games immediately after selection, without relying on ongoing updates or special features. Highlight the desire for full control over content and the freedom to modify or bypass restrictions that limit current console offerings.
Steam auto-starting and finding affordable wireless keyboard/mouse setups aren't viable options. Some models even include a trackpad instead of a mouse, making it simpler to perform those few clicks from your couch. Additionally, pressing the home button on a controller can launch the Steam client in big picture mode quickly.
The PS5 runs significantly quicker than the PS4 Pro. I've been enjoying Death Stranding on PS5 instead of PC because it's much easier to use there. It was available for free on PC through Epic, but I ended up buying a used copy for my PS4.
