I'm working on boosting my 2500k CPU for ASUS MaximusIV GENE-Z.
Recently, my 5-year-old computer has been having trouble with the new games. Particularly with DOOM (around 30fps). I decided to upgrade by purchasing a new graphics card, either GTX1070 or GTX1060 depending on when it was released. At that time, I also considered tweaking my old i5-2500k. I didn’t have much experience with overclocking and was hoping you could offer some advice (even if overclocking isn’t feasible for my model).
With Prime95, my CPU temperature is currently at 37°C. Here are my specifications:
Intel Core i5 2500K Sandy Bridge
Coolmaster v8 (the older EDT)
ASUS Maximus IV GENE-Z Sandy Bridge
Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600MHz (4x4GB)
MSI N560GTX-Ti Hawk (1 GB)
Corsair Gaming Series GS800
Evo 850 250gb
You can boost your system's performance by overclocking (my main gamer has comparable specs), using Asus's "Extreme Tweaker" settings in BIOS (it offers choices for 4.2 GHz or 4.6 GHz). Alternatively, you can do it the traditional way by manually adjusting frequencies and voltages, with many guides available to walk you through the process. I recommend checking a few guides to understand the steps and pick one that suits your comfort level, then proceed accordingly.
