I explored this three-hour topic and found myself overwhelmed. Let's begin from scratch... I chose to install a VPN and set up a Nord account. Next, I tried to configure it on my PC—found that you can power your router through the VPN, which became my approach. "Host name not found" appeared on Asus, suggesting it might be free and I should try brute-forcing the name. After 20 deliberate attempts plus 30 random delays, still nothing. I decided to search Google and purchase a domain for a silly website. Spent $12, then used SiteGround’s 90-day trial to host my project. Couldn’t get it right, but at least I had a fun result. Now I’m down $40 and only have a special email to prove it was worth it! Time to figure out the VPN setup properly."

Consider renting a VPS service. Connect via SSH to that server. Either configure your VPN from the ground up (simple enough) or employ tools like Angristan's openvpn-installer (provided your router supports OpenVPN). Retrieve the client setup from the server and enter the necessary details (or use .ovpn files if supported by your router). Progress? It’s unclear exactly what you’re aiming for. You haven’t provided specifics beyond the fact you “bruteforced the hostname” and have an ASUS router.

Because it was mentioned before, if you just need a VPN connection to access your home network from your phone, you could also purchase a Raspberry Pi and set it up in your home network with OpenVPN installed. This way you avoid monthly fees and keep your traffic within your local network instead of sending it to a VPS provider first.

Also using a VPN is possible, but it doesn't justify the cost. Ultimately it's up to you. Running your VPN through a VPS offers a new internet entry point and avoids dependence on a slow residential connection or local network issues. I'm willing to pay $1 each month for my VPS instead of managing a VPN locally.
