Five months ago I purchased an 81GB Pro from a user on /r/softwareswap. Right now my OS is running on my HDD, and I’m considering switching to an SSD. My question is whether I can install the OS directly onto the new SSD immediately or if I need to make changes first—like turning off the current HDD or something similar.

It's likely you can simply set it up on the new SSD without any changes. Make sure you're using the license just once during the process. Once the installation is complete, clean the HDD.
