Hello, I need to discuss this somewhere. After trying to reinstall Windows 10 and making some mistakes, I lost my activation key and spent around $100. I upgraded from Windows 8 to 10 but thought I was getting the updated key—turns out it wasn’t. Now I have an unactivated fresh install of Windows 10, and my old Windows 8 key isn’t working either. I’ve reached out to Microsoft support several times, but a lot of this feels like my mistake. I’m really upset and would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you for reading.

Can I reload version 8 and attempt the upgrade once more, or do you lack the installation media? Also, no backups available?

Perfect setup just completed. Windows 8 Fresh is ready. You can move on to 8.1, upgrade to 10, or contact support for further assistance.

Yes, you can reinstall Windows 8 using your key and then proceed to upgrade. Make sure your key is still valid before starting the process.

I tried it too, I’m planning to set up Windows 8.1 (the code I got is for that), then move to version 10, and after upgrading you can perform a fresh install of 10 post-upgrading. It should take no more than a few hours, though it feels a bit confusing.

You might lose your Windows key by upgrading to a newer version. If you upgraded to 10, your Microsoft account should already have it; logging in should work without issues. For a Windows 8 key, you’ll need to reinstall the OS and then upgrade again.

I know people often need assistance, and I’m happy to help. There should be a Windows 10 section on the forums at LinusTech where you can find more information.

I’m trying to understand this. It sounds complicated but actually straightforward. First, install Windows 8 and activate it—if it doesn’t work, try activating the phone instead. Then ensure everything is fully updated, including the latest drivers. After that, you should find the “Get Windows 10” app. It will let you know if your system is ready for Windows 10 or needs more time. If not, wait until the manufacturer has finished updating their drivers for your hardware. Most companies don’t release updates during beta testing, like they did with Vista. People’s experiences vary: some work perfectly, others face problems. It’s better to let the upgrade happen naturally rather than rushing it. If you want a smooth experience, consider waiting 1-2 months while manufacturers finalize their drivers for Windows 10.
