You're looking at choosing between the Core2Quad Q6600 and Q8300 for your e8400 upgrade. Both are solid options, but the Q6600 generally offers better performance due to its higher clock speeds and more cores, making it a stronger choice if you want improved multitasking and gaming. The Q8300 is also capable but may lag slightly behind in demanding tasks. Consider your specific needs—gaming or general use—to decide which fits better.

Can you handle a complete system upgrade? The Core 2 platform is nearing its end of life, and it's only about three memory generations away from being outdated. If not, it’s best to plan for a full upgrade. The performance improvement you’ll notice will be dramatic when compared to the gap between a Core 2 Duo E8400 and a Core 2 Quad Q8300.

I tested two e8400 units and the q6600 didn't perform well. Only the q9550 worked until 2016, and it's still being used at a vocational training school for cutting vinyl signs. I'd prefer the q8300 since it might match the q9550 closely. The upgrade I aimed for was the q9650, but it never dropped in price while I used LGA 775 processors.

I made this change around ten years ago on my work machine. Back then the impact was small, but it won’t matter much now. If you have a used PC with an i5 from the second or third generation, consider it; otherwise, I’d hold off.
