You mean that the internet isn't going to agree with everyone? I am getting exactly what I wanted. People give advice based on their own stories, but I never thought they had similar experiences or made the same choices. Yet, I'm learning a lot from these comments. Thanks to all of you. Once my build pieces arrive, my questions will change. For now, I'll keep reading and watching how others handle Windows 10. I wish my timing worked out better; Windows 11 might launch before I have a chance on Windows 10. But as far as the schedule goes, I picked one hell of a year to build my first PC. Chips, cases, and motherboards are in short supply, and GPUs aren't even available yet. Oh no... However, the decision to jump right now was made by my dying iMac. It's quitting its fight and about to give up against defeat. Its GPU is broken (SOL). The black screens last longer and longer.
What do you guys use for moving, organizing and storing your camera pictures? On my Mac, I put an SD card in and open Photos, which comes up with the Apple app on it. It transfers all the photos and sorts them automatically. From there, I pick "Favorites" to see what I like, then open them in Photoshop to fix their colors. This is something I will use soon and not just for fun learning.
A USB cable connects the camera to your PC. You copy all existing photos from the camera into a folder on the PC. This folder has specific drives and subfolders for different types like RAW, JPGs, movies, organized by year or month. It's manual but very easy if you stay organized. Then use Adobe Lightroom to manage all the RAW files and make a catalog. I don't want to let software automatically import libraries; instead, I prefer to know exactly where every file is located.
I just share what I have used or tried out. Speccy...it's pretty good for seeing how things work under the hood. Haven't noticed any problems with it. Revo...I'm only recently getting started testing this one. So far, my experience shows that sometimes the default uninstaller leaves a lot of junk behind. Mbam...it's nice to get a second opinion on these issues. Win def does seem pretty good at cleaning things up, but I suppose that really depends where you go and what you do. Ccleaner...helps throw out some build-up items. Using it along with disk cleanup and the combo can help tidy things up a bit. Open shell as mentioned before...makes finding stuff easier for me. Sometimes things seem to get stuck in weird places, then the next Microsoft update moves them to even weirder spots...that's really annoying.
That saved my butt once before. I was being careless when I cut a bunch of photos off my phone from my PC, pasted them onto the same PC, changed my mind, hit CTRL+Z to move them back to my phone. It didn't just move them back; it totally erased them all. Recuva found and saved everything for free in less than half an hour after hours of failure on Google and other free recovery programs.
I move a lot of photos around manually because there are so many of them each week. Using a cable instead of a card reader feels kind of painful too. I want to be able to keep shooting and download the pictures, but I really enjoy auto-organizing my files. (At least that worked on Macs; we'll see how Windows handles it). Hey @USAFRet. There are far too many ways to go. Actually, I only do around 10k every year. It's not really a lot when looked at day by day. You can use either a card reader or plug the USB directly into the camera. How is it done right now?
I keep using WinDirStat. Now I have a similar tool called WizTree that works way faster.
I don't use any extra tools now, only Malwarebytes. Chrome and Edge can read PDFs easily and I never need tons of software so I avoid installers too. My favorite programs are Sublime Text 4 and Sublime Merge. That's it. The best editor ever And the best git client ever
