I'm here to assist you. What's the issue with your new build?
Hello everyone, I've just finished assembling my first build. Everything seems to be functioning except for the issue when trying to load Windows from my HDD—something that worked before. My system is currently running Linux on an emergency flash drive, and it's operating perfectly. Could anyone suggest what might have gone wrong or offer possible solutions?
You cannot transfer an older Windows install from one computer to another. It will fail and cause a crash shortly after loading. This happens because Windows installs are tied to the specific hardware, which affects compatibility. The recommended solution is to reinstall Windows.
Your previous machine was made by the manufacturer (like Dell or HP), so you’ll likely need to purchase a fresh operating system. If it was built specifically for you, you can move the software license from one computer to another using the installation disc and the same key.
In reality, to ensure full compliance and avoid any issues: purchasing an OEM license from a computer store means the agreement specifies that it cannot be transferred. Attempting to activate it again will result in failure. A phone activation can grant access, but this was permitted when the old motherboard was damaged and no longer covered by warranty, requiring a full system upgrade. Microsoft is accommodating by not adding extra costs for such situations. If it's a retail version (upgrade or full), there are no concerns.
