Repeated attempts to power off always triggered the same alert, even without launching VirtualBox. After clicking shutdown, the system would freeze until I held the power button for a few seconds.

Before powering off, Virtual Box might appear in Task Manager at any time.

Well there's your problem. It's blocking the shutdown. End that task and it should shutdown clean. Though you should also be able to just click Shutdown Anyway and windows will kill it for you. You should look at the Startup tab in Task Manager to see if it's launching automatically. If it's not there check VB's own settings for anything like "launch on startup" or "start on login". If it's not there check Scheduled Tasks. If it's not there, check the Services tab of Task Manager. One of those places should be auto launching it.
