I’d recommend taking a closer look and giving it some attention. Start by cleaning out all the fans and checking your power supply for any blockages, then inspect your graphics card to ensure there’s no buildup. You could also consider adding some aftermarket thermal paste and replacing it on your CPU – if you’re not comfortable with that, a professional can certainly handle it. However, the fans should definitely start running louder as temperatures climb above 80 degrees, working harder to pull in more air and keep things cool.
I’ve been maintaining things pretty well, doing a small tidy-up every five days since it tends to get dusty down here. I’m interested in trying some new thermal paste, and if that doesn't significantly improve things, I’d be happy to share my thoughts here or send you a direct message.
Let me just give you an idea on what extra fans and new thermal paste can do. In my RIg i have a coolermaster 212 evo CPu cooler (utilizing a Push Pull setup) attached to an AMD ryzen 5 3600x overclocked to 4.25ghz (base is 3.8). I also run with an Rx580 (triple fans) i have 5 case fans. 3 intake 2 exhaust. i also have central air to keep my room cool. Currently on idle with about 1200RPM on my GPU fans i sit at 27 Degrees. My CPU (keep in mind AMD max temp is 95) im sitting at around 32-34 degrees. The highest temps i've seen when i don't do any manual adjustments for my fans is 60-70 degrees when i adjust my fan speed i drop back down to 50 or less. Perhaps look into downloading some programs that will allow you to adjust fan speeds to increase cooling, replace thermal paste and maybe buy one or two more fans to help cool more. Im not saying buy the fans now, but try the other workarounds first and see if you notice a change or improvement
These temperatures aren't dramatically elevated. With my RX 5700, I’m seeing idle temperatures around 55°C and between 75°C to 80°C while gaming – which I consider perfectly acceptable. Typically, CPUs and GPUs can handle temperatures up to 85°C without issues, only really starting to throttle when they reach around 95°C. So, if you’re not hitting those kinds of temperatures, I wouldn't worry too much about overheating.
I’m honestly at a loss for what might be causing this, though. You mentioned experiencing those significant FPS drops specifically in Apex Legends and Modern Warfare, but not in other similarly demanding games – is that accurate?
Besides Overwatch and Mordhau, that’s really all I have running on this computer. And surprisingly, I haven't seen any drops in my frame rate with either of them installed.
Given his game settings, he shouldn’t be pushing his graphics card to 80 or more frames per second. I'm still unsure about his CPU temperatures when the game is running at its highest settings. The game’s settings themselves might also be a factor. To me, his idle temperatures seem elevated – 43 degrees Celsius for the CPU and over 50 on the GPU, considering he’s in a relatively cool room.
I’ve got a ROG STRIX Rx580 here, and I'm going to try something – I’ll turn my fans all the way down to zero and see how that affects things. I'll keep an eye on the temperatures, letting you know when they stop rising and hold steady. Then I’ll update you on what happens when the GPU runs without any fans spinning at all.
I’d just gotten back from being out and immediately booted up Modern Warfare, as it had a new update. I’ve only been playing for about six minutes and twenty-two seconds at this point, but my CPU temperature is already pushing 70 degrees, and my GPU’s steadily rising – it just hit 81C while I was at the main menu.
