Over the past week, I’ve been experiencing significant frame rate drops in both Modern Warfare and Apex Legends. My Apex installation is on a 4TB hard drive, while Modern Warfare runs on a 500GB SSD. In Apex, the dips are completely random—I’ve seen them while simply walking, during firefights, and even when navigating my inventory. With Modern Warfare, the drops tend to occur primarily in standard multiplayer matches during gunfights, but they’re much more frequent and disruptive within the Warzone Battle Royale—happening while I'm walking, running, looting, aiming with sniper scopes, entering and exiting vehicles, and frequently during combat. I haven’t experienced these issues with any other games at the moment.

I recently updated my Nvidia drivers yesterday, but these problems started about a week before that update. Aside from a minor Windows security patch, nothing else has changed on my system. I’ve checked the Intel and Nvidia error logs, but haven't found any relevant information. However, I’m consistently seeing a large number of errors indicating unexpected disk disconnections for Disk 3 and Disk 4, even though I don’t have those drives connected. My only peripherals plugged into the PC are my controller, always using the same port.

I’ve spent time researching forums for both games and the Nvidia community, but haven't found a definitive explanation for these FPS drops. There’s discussion about potential problems with RTX 2070 and 2080 cards, but the issues reported are generally much less severe than what I’m experiencing—typically just a slight dip below 100 FPS. My drops are much more dramatic, going from full frames (around 120) to as low as 30, and sometimes even lower.

I’ve already run repair scans on both games and completely reinstalled Modern Warfare once before. My system specs are: 16GB of RAM, an Intel i7-9700K CPU running at 3.60GHz, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, a 500GB SSD, and two hard drives totaling 6TB. Someone suggested updating my BIOS, but I’m not sure how to do that or if it's even necessary—this PC was purchased two months ago and is still under warranty.

Could you describe how your system cools down? Do you have a lot of fans, or very few? Are you using the fan that came with your processor (the “stock” one)? And what temperatures do you see when you experience a drop in frame rates?

Two large fans are positioned up front, with another located in the back. You’ll also find two more fans attached to the graphics card, and a single fan cooling the processor. Currently, the GPU is running at approximately 80 degrees.

Is it running at 80 degrees on standby, or when you’re playing games? And could you also check the CPU temperature while it's doing those things?

Right now, I’m just relaxing and my computer's running cool—the CPU is hovering around 43 degrees Celsius, while the GPU’s averaging about 50.

That seems unusually high for idle temperatures. My CPU and GPU are both running at around 30 degrees while idling, so I’m wondering if your computer is located in a particularly warm space?

There’s an air conditioner in the adjacent room, and it's really keeping my space cool right now.

So given that it's pretty chill as you put it that means you are experiencing frame drops due to HIgh Temps when at load. Have you done any Overclocking to anything in your build? You used the cooler that came with the CPU right?

I received this computer as a complete, ready-to-use system – I haven’t modified it in any way or added any new components.

so yeah it sounds like you are experiencing HIgh Temps which will cause you to lose frames when the temps get higher. given that you don't have many fans in your computer, its not getting enough cool air into the case to allow things to cool down. Does it get really loud at times? like the fans revving up ?
