Windows 8... The native MSTool works well. I believe the top antivirus protection comes from your own awareness. Smart choices won’t help much. P.S. I assumed you meant something different when you said "AV."

Malwarebytes and Windows Defender were reliable, though Avast performed poorly. I even used a free version, but shutdowns were frequent and performance was terrible. The paid versions also caused problems when pirated, which isn’t unexpected.

I no longer use Avast. It wasn’t worth the effort to reinstall. I waited a week just to get it running properly.

Only Windows Defender is recommended. AVs often cause more problems than they solve. Just stay mindful of what you download and where you surf. I haven’t encountered any malware since the last time I used it.

I don’t have any except the AV included with Windows 8.1. I run occasional scans using malware detection tools, but I’m careful about what I click.
