People in California can definitely come up with creative names for desert areas there. The idea of changing names or updating systems is similar to what happened with Mojave, where adjustments were made without major disruptions. Sierra and High Sierra are likely to follow a similar approach.

Death Valley is the only idea that came to mind, a desert type of thought, haha.

Tim Cook could say something like "macOS Death Valley"... I’d love to hear him make that comment.

It's not necessarily desert-linked, just a notable site in California. macOS LA River

Typically we experience a major update followed by a more modest one focused on fixes and enhancements. The latter tends to share the same naming conventions as the larger release. Given that Mojave was a significant overhaul, I expect the upcoming version will be even more streamlined.

There seems to be some confusion about the absence of MacOS X Kitten.

We’re focusing on places now, so I’d pick Zzyzx. It’s right by the Mojave—ideal for a small update that no one will ever get right.
