Illustrative case showing how piracy may result in bankruptcy
This response highlights significant delays in addressing the issue. It clarifies that the data doesn’t confirm piracy’s impact on sales. The argument focuses on the prevalence of piracy without providing evidence that consumers would purchase the game otherwise.
I understand the post was shared on Reddit today. It’s not a definitive 100% accurate study, but it offers a thought-provoking piece of content.
I wasn't aware it had been talked about before. It's a 2013 release, and I just came across it today.
I dont think the publisher for World of Goo did well either. You are right, there is no proof of pirate download equalling lost sales, but what we can surmise is that a pirated download will likely lead to them not buying the game. I agree pirating doesn't neccessarily lead large percentages of lost sales, it still doesn't make it right, and maybe it can make enough of a difference to something with smaller sales.
But we can guess that using a pirated download probably won’t encourage them to purchase the game. Sorry, but I’m after it to test its performance. If it works well, I buy it; if not, I delete it and skip the purchase. Recently, I downloaded Metro Last Light Redux just to see how it performed—I added it to my Steam library. No one will ever find out how much piracy impacts sales.
After reflecting on this, it’s actually quite amusing. In fact, my own piracy helped the developers sell more copies. If I hadn’t pirated it to try it, I might never have bought it. Lol.
It's rare for me to break into a game. Usually I just check if I'm unsure about something. Like watching dogs. *I've never played watch_dogs* If I had pirated a game and really liked it, I'd probably buy it to help the developers keep making awesome games (at least that's what I'd hope).
