I noticed a popular Reddit comment recommending continued use of Windows 10 past its end-of-life date, which I find unacceptable. What’s the overall opinion on this? Should I upgrade to Windows 11, keep using Windows 10, or move to Linux/Mac instead?
I stick to Windows 10 unless new titles need Windows 11, after which I switch to it. I mainly use my PC just for gaming.
Windows 10 is expected to receive prolonged support, officially or informally.
This likely refers to informal or unofficial practices, ideas, or behaviors that aren't officially sanctioned but are still practiced within a group or community.
I don't see a clear case for moving to Windows 11 since it hasn't been proven why updates to Windows 10 wouldn't have addressed existing issues. W11 remains largely limited to Intel CPUs from the 12th generation and Ryzen 7900X/7950X models, even though purchasing multiple X3D chips is generally discouraged. Most users with other processors are fine with Windows 10. Additionally, given the negative experience with Windows 11's adware and feature removal, I'm comfortable sticking with Windows 10. If hardware performance was adequate, I'd consider reverting to Windows 7.
It depends on what you focus on. Playing directly on the machine usually works if you run Windows 10 past EOL. I’ve upgraded my setup to version 11, and I also use a MacBook Pro and a Steam Deck—Linux on the deck has been fine. My mom’s system doesn’t meet Windows 11 specs. Some suggest ignoring the requirements, but given Microsoft’s history, they might make changes that complicate things later. It would be better to learn Linux or get a ready-made version instead of dealing with issues down the line.
Only using it for REFS now is frustrating. I’m not sure why but it’s the only filesystem that handles all three hard drives without turning into 'RAW' or read-only after a while if formatted with NTFS, FAT or EXT4. It only works with REFS. I also think it’s time to give up on Fallout 4 and NV, since they don’t run on Linux.
I haven’t tried Steam Tried before and setting up mods was really tough, especially since installers don’t work on Linux either. I’m thinking about moving to Linux once I get all the data from the drives and might run W10 in a VM just for gaming. I already have the cores and RAM.
